First GPS

Date:February 7, 2011
"Got this GPS back in 2006 and ever since then it’s been working just fine. Great for marking hunting spots, fishing spots, camping spots and trails. Was able to purchase a mount for my quad and bike. Can run off 12V or 2 AA batteries which last very long. When lost out on the water in a canoe, in the middle of the night this it was the first time I tested this machine to manoeuvre through lakes around islands and down rivers to make it back to camp. I’ve trusted this GPS multiple times and will continue to do so.
Has also shown short cuts through the bush for carrying out a mountain bike or dragging out a deer. So many uses. Love it."

Decent GPS, but it's old technology

Date:April 28, 2011
"I've had the GPSMap76 for about 3-4 years and it generally performed OK for the duration. Unfortunately it got abused awhile on the deck of my kayak and so sea water infiltrated it last week (due to the abuse, not due to a real failing of the unit). Anyway, the GPSMap 76 uses old receiver technology. The newer receivers are more accurate, find their satellites more quickly, and use less battery to boot. Note that the GPSmap 76 has been discontinued by Garmin. For the price, you would do well to find a different Garmin unit."

Best tool

Date:December 3, 2008
"I bought the 76csx spring 2008 and since then it is my best friend on the road and on water. It's crazy how much you can do with the GPS, such as pressure, altimeter, speed, low tide/high tide. It makes driving less stressful as you have a navigator, you take a wrong turn, no worries, it gets you an alternative route. You need a gas station or some stores, it's in there. Remember, you need all the proper maps to be able to profit from this unit, such as city navigator, bluechart and topo. It will also save you your marine engine as you will avoid shallow areas in turbid waters. If someone is overboard, you can mark an MOB (man over board) which will tell you where you left them. It will also inform you when sun/moon will be up and down. Where the moon and sun is exactly in the sky and when are the best fishing days and time."

Great (but not perfect) Product

Date:November 25, 2008
"I recieved this GPS as a Christmas gift two years ago. I do a lot of off-road motorcycling and after getting lost numerous times in 2005 my parents decided to give me a GPS so it didn't happen again.
Overall the GPSMap 76 is an excellent product. The large screen makes navigation on the move easy, but the lack of colour can make seeing the screen difficult if the sun is behind you. If you plan on using this product on a motorcycle like I do, I strongly recommend a bar mount for it. I use a RAM unit and absolutely love it.
The mapping feature on this GPS is excellent. However, the limited internal 8MB memory and limited number of waypoints can pose problems for some. I had to buy MapSource software to manage my maps and points of interest and as long as I keep my maps in separate files I have yet to have any issues.
Two issues I have experienced with this unit, while being minor in nature but still rather bothersome, are easily corrected with the right stuff. First and foremost, DO NOT use cheap batteries in this GPS if it will be subject to moderate to high vibration. I had problems with the unit cutting outwhile riding when using anything but Duracell or Energizer batteries. Using the optional 12DC power supply cable would also correct this. Also, the plastic screen cover tends to scratch when used in dusty environments. I simply purchased one of those iPod screen protector kits and trimmed it to fit the screen on the GPS. Saves a lot of time and money down the road!
Overall this is an excellent product and I strongly recommend it for others. This unit isn't perfect, but it can be used as a handheld, mounted on a motorcycle and the screen is large enough to use in a car as long as you don't want turn by turn directions."

Nice unit.

Date:June 3, 2008
"When I go hunting in the woods here in Alberta, this is my main weapon. Checking spots or getting to the spots you marked on Google Earth are a breeze. Many times checking new ground, I basically drive blind, that is as long as you have the unit on, you never have to worry. You always know where you are in relation to the mapped roads and you can see the trail where you've been. Take a turn on the cut-line and you know you will get out by checking your tracks. Great while ice fishing, mark the spots and find the way out, even if blined by snow.
I would recommend a cigarrette lighter plug in. I have this unit on from the minute I leave my house, on the drive there and back and on the quad. I think I must have used a set of batteries since the time I got the adapter."

Good but limited memory

Date:March 21, 2008
"Well made, big, clear mono display, good buttons. Comes with PC cable but only 8MB memory which is too limited to be useful. You can't get the whole Golden Horseshoe loaded from the optional MetroGuide, but base maps ok. No memory expansion. Not a turn-by-turn driving tool, but a well designed GPS. It is happiest when held upright. On sale, it is a good value."

Great buy

Date:October 3, 2007
"Bought this item last year for 1/2 price. Excellent GPS. I like its larger then normal size for a hand held which makes it easy to use. I use it mostly for fishing and saving my secret hot spots. But the map feature is great for planning road trips. You can hook it up to a laptop and use the enroute software from Garmin to get a turn by turn voice direction. For $175 it was a great buy."

decent

Date:September 22, 2007
"I use this GPS for work in the bush. The unit comes preloaded with major roads, cities and towns etc, it is not a street map style GPS. It allows you to plot, calculates hectares etc if you walk a perimeter and even has suggested hunting and fishing times for your location. I saw a question about its use in the U.S; Yes, it is preloaded with the entire planet, you can choose which map datum to use, it will be important to know which database you are using and referencing from."
