Excellent bike

Date:April 6, 2013
"This is an excellent bike for those who are looking to have a road bike experience on a limited budget. Bought this bike three years ago and had it stolen a year ago. I bought another one yesterday at an unbelievable price of $219.99 ($150.00 below the normal cost). I agree with the other reviewers that the bike is a little bit heavy, but where in Canada can you get such a decent bike for the same cost? My advise though is that you need to check the bike first in store before you purchase it. They can make some minor adjustments which the other reviewers are complaining about such as loose brakes, gear adjustments etc before you take it home. I repeat again, please check the bike thoroughly before you take it home!"

Not even decent.

"Bought it for $210. Don't bother with this, get something else.
- Rear tire released all air within 4 km of riding
- Front sprockets are not even. Some highs some low, pretty shoddy work.
- Seat is uber uncomfortable.
Returned it already."

"Good bike for my first touring attempt, I have no doubts that it could have gone sea to sea. I only made one real change to the bike by changing the freewheel to one with an ultimate granny gear. Didn't have to walk a single hill over the rockies! Fully loaded, front and back panniers. The front handle adjusts upwards by an inch or so. There's a line that says "Max height" when you get as far as it should go. I was lucky to realize this after only a day of travel. The twist shifters are a little annoying as there is little room to mount lights or handlebar bags, but the price can't be beat. I could have actually gone across the country and if I had any problems, take it to the nearest CT for warranty!"

great bike for the price

Date:August 29, 2012
"I bought the medalist road bike 3 years ago (looks exactly the same but they now call them the ccm road bikes. I just love this bike. A bit heavier then your average road bike but to be honest, I feel safer . The wheels are a bit thicker but again I don't mind that just incase I hit the gravel.
I went today to see if the bike has went on sale and I got the bike for 210 plus tax. This is an excellent price. Even the regular price of 349 isn't bad. Because I had the same bike, I kind of knew what I was getting. If you are looking for a basic road bike, this one won't disappoint. The only issue is that all the bikes have the same size frames so therefore I don't know if you can ride this bike if you are 6 feet or higher. Also, I am light (118 pounds) so this might also be the reason why I have got a lot of wear from the other bike.

Depends on what you are looking for

Date:July 24, 2012
"I bought this bike 2 weeks ago. I was not looking for a decent road bike because I don't have too much to spend since I'm still a student. The price of this road bike is really good to me. I used to bicycle long distance trips with a mountain bike, and this summer I just wanted to try a road bike for commuting to work, so this is the one that I would start with. I bought it for original price for $360 (the cheapest one I could find in a local bike store is $899, which is 54cm in length).
Other reviews are right, this bike needs to be adjusted, So I highly recommend to those who know how to tune up a bike. I spent 2 hours tuning up the bike right after I bought it. And Honestly I didn't like the color on this bike. So I painted to black and white. Now it looks great. So far, It has 500+km on it, works pretty good.
Drawbacks I found on my bike:
1.It could not shift to 3x4 and 3x3 for my bike. I could tune it but I don't bother because I usually use 3x(5+) on flat trail and 3x(2-) on a uphill.
2. The brakes are not quite good, you have to press hard to stop. I think I will change the breaking rubbers sometimes.
3.It is heavier than the professional ones, but it's not a problem for me at all, I can still lift it with one hand with ease.
4. It's wheels are little bit wider than normal ones, but it's good to me because 60% of the bicycle trails are not paved in this city, it's not a problem at all for me to commute on sandy trails every day.
5.It's probably not very durable, I would say it would last another 2 or probably 3 years. At that time, I will buy a professional one.
Generally, it a good road bike to start with. I have a smile on my face each time I ride it on the trails. In 2 or 3 years from now, I will have a professional one and probably dislike each functionality of this bike(sorry), but I don't regret my purchase."

You get what you pay for

Date:July 19, 2012
"I bought this bike a couple years ago on sale (something like $179.99) for commuting around campus at school. While it seemed like a "good deal" at the time, I'll list the problems/issues I've come across since I bought it, some of which have been noted by other reviewers. All in all its taught me how to adjust/fix just about everything on a bike which I guess I'm thankful for.
-700x28c tires are bigger than most standard road bikes (usually 25c or 23c)
-alumnium shavings/valve hole punch out not removed from inside the rim. Appears as a "rattle" in the wheel and takes some effort to get out. Shavings will lead to flat tires if not cleaned out.
-axle and bottom bracket bearing cones much too tight (will wear out the bearings quickly if not adjusted)
-7 speed freewheel: most modern bikes have moved to *at least* 8 speed cassettes. Had to replace the freewheel after about a year and a half
-grip shifters are awkward on a road bike/drop bars. They're most likely there because it keeps the cost of the bike down
-older style threaded headset (compared to newer threadless style). Stem attachment to the handlebars uses a spacer which, combined with the grip shifters, leaves little space for accessories (cycling computer, lights, etc.)
-poor quality drivetrain components meaning you'll constantly be adjusting derailleurs
Overall, you can't beat the price (on sale) if you're buying it for commuting, a bike for school or for very occasional cycling. But if you're looking for a decent road bike, wait for your LBS (local bike shop) to have a sale and spend a few more bucks on an entry level road bike; it'll save you time, money, and frustration in the long run."

heavy like a tank, & poorly located shifters

No excuse for a bike to be heavy like this;
Many steel frame road bikes weigh less.
Other reviews here
make plain that
quality, & reliability is
questionable at best.
If you decide to get a CT bike,
try to buy it
when the bike mechanic is there, &
go over everything -
especially
seat, & handlebar heights,
shifter, & brake adjustments, &
tire pressures.

Not bad, Not Great

Date:May 1, 2012
"This bike seems ok. It feels slightly heavy but not a huge deal. The breaks seem ok, maybe upgrading to better break pads will help without costing too much extra money. The decals have that typical CCM cheap look to it, for me I think ill take off a couple and keep it plain and simple.
Two problems I find, one is the shifters. Although the shifting is good, the fact that this is a road bike with grip shift shifters is a little weird. Higher end bikes have dual control shifters, where you can shift with the break lever. But I guess you cant expect this road bike to have higher end parts. So IN that sense I guess its ok. Also since there are grip shifters the cables are constantly in the way when trying to grip the top of the bar. For me its a little annoying to always have to make sure my hands are under the shifter cables. or else the way there placed when you grip the bar, you'll naturally grip the cables as well.
All in all, if this bike is on sale AT LEAST 40% then its worth it for an entry level bike. But at full price, trust me don't waste your money. put another 200 and get something MUCH better at a bike shop. I asked how much it would cost to upgrade the shifters to the dual control shifters, and the price was anywhere from at least 200-500. Including the cheapest shifters plus labour.
Also lets not forget an equivalent bike in the USA Walmart, goes for about $150 regular price, lol. So it goes to show you how cheap this bike really is.
But anyhow, its a good entry level bike if you cant afford better entry level bikes, buy it on sale and you'll have fun."

Continued Review......
Posted May 3, 2012
Got the change to ride this bike a lot more and for a much longer duration, plus I'v had it for a few days so I can better review this product.
For one, the cables don't get in the way anymore because on the cables there a little plastic clip that clips to both brake cables and holds them away from the handle. Also it was never the shifters cable but rather the break cables. But thats ok now.
A few things I noticed: the breaks were a little weak, the shifting is a little off (doesn't shift on gear properly) and for the break pads, when I pushed on the back breaks, one side of the break calliper would stick to the wheel. So basically this will slow you down, require more energy and wear out the break pad.
Solutions: These must be adjusted if you want to optimize your riding experience. all the issues I expressed can all be adjusted and fixed but you need to have an idea of what to do. Youtube videos will help, or a local bike store can do it for you.
Overall good bike, however if you really want to road cycle and want to be serious, for example, going on bike paths with long distances and tracking time, speed and really involved in road/speed biking then you should buy something over 600, at least. Otherwise this is more than enough for casual here and there. For half price its well worth it if your serious and cant afford a better road bike and full price is fine if its for casual riding and nothing serious.

For the price, the bike is perfect

Date:April 13, 2012
"Like other reviews, just make sure the bike is well mounted by the Canadianire employe. Chek the wheels (spokes) ,pedals, gears and fit the bike for you. If you have problems, just go to a bike store for a tune up and after that, the bike dosen't even feel like or look like a 300$ bike. For the price, the bike is flawless"

Good Bike

Date:February 11, 2012
"I was a cycle nut when I was younger drooling over magazines and dreaming one day I would be able to afford a aluminum frame with twist shift.Yes one day I would spend a thousand or two to own such a beast. This is a nice bike with a low price. At 13 kg it isn't heavy for a man of my size and enjoy that is built well This is not a racing bike it is a touring bike, treat it as such and you will not be disappointed.
As all mass manufactured bikes matenaince is key
if you are not mechanicly inclined. get someone who is .
at the end of the day this is a good bike for the price."

Great value, Fun bike.

Date:August 5, 2011
"Pros: Smooth ride, excellent ergonomics, good brakes, smooth gear changes, the price ($174.99) makes this road bike an excellent value.
Cons: Lacks the brand name snob appeal of high end road bikes (if that is important to you), needs to be "tuned up" after bringing home (easy actually)
I have sampled a lot of bikes over the years and find that this bike is an excellent value. The front and back wheels are bolted on and the seat adjustment uses Allen Key bolts. This is practical for me because I don't remove the wheels and seat very often and prefer this over quick release devices which make stealing these parts quite easy for thieves. A kickstand and bottle holder are also included.
Your experience with this bike could depend on the skill of the bike assembler at Canadian Tires. I trust specialized bike stores more for proper assembly, but it is very unlikely you'll find a quality road bike for $179.99 anywhere else.
My advice for potential purchasers is that you inspect the bike for straight wheels that do not wobble, check the brakes for good tension, and check the drailleurs for smooth changing between speeds. You will need someone to hold up the bike while you pedal the wheels and change gears. If you are not satisfied, ask a Candian Tire tech to make adjustments before you buy it, or you can take it to a specialized bike store for a tune up, or if you are relatively handy, try tuning it yourself with the help of YouTube where there are many videos on how to fix a bike.
If you can do this, your ride will be smooth and quiet. I am very "picky" about esthetic details also, and find the bike's fit and finish very important. In general the handle bar taping is well done, the paint job was good, and the decals were straight and symmetrical, but the odd air bubble trapped in the decals was annoying esthetically. There were some scratches in the finish from the careless placement of the assembler's wrench and allen keys. Of course, most of the bikes I reviewed in store were acceptable.
Overall, this is a fun road bike and for most recreational users, this bike will last for years especially if you tune up this bike (or any bike) regularly to minimize early wear and tear. Great price at $179.99.
Have fun."

Better than a MTN bike on paved roads

Date:July 17, 2011
"I replaced my mountain bike with this (on sale for $200). I have been biking around 30km each day for the last 2 months. Shifting gears is incredibly noisy and will need to be adjusted, but it will never be quiet. Brakes are weak and chain falls off about once every 2 weeks. This having been said, I realize now that a road bike is definitely superior to a mountain bike on paved roads. I was not ready to "invest" over $500 on a bike, not knowing how much I would be using it, so this bike has gotten me started. Certainly an attractive bike and if you plan to do long distance on paved roads, this is good value at <$200. I'm using a gel seat cover though the seat does NOT appear standard. I will likely replace it in a year with something more reliable in the $700 range. Overall a good "starter" bike for <$200 - not good if you are a serious biker."

Good for the price

Date:July 13, 2011
"I purchased this bike on sale in early 2010, did about 1000km around home, and then rode it from Winnipeg to Gaspe. It has about 4500km on it now with no major failures, but it's getting a bit worn (stretched chain, sprockets worn, front shifter restricted, rear wheel bent (Northern Ontario Roads).
I think I will buy another one (on sale) for Vancouver to Winnipeg. I could buy 4 or 5 of these for the price of a 'proper' touring bike, and with this one I don't care if I loose it."

Unimpressed

Date:July 4, 2011
"So I bought this bike on the 22nd of June 2011, I have put less than 10km on it and the shifters/derailleurs are failing to shift when under load, who ever assembled this bike had no idea at all what they were doing and quite frankly should not be assembling bikes any longer.
I thought grip shift on a road bike was a dumb idea but figured I would try it out anyways, I was right grip shifting belongs on a mountain bike and no where else, it is far too unreliable and slow to be on a road bike.
For me to make this bike reliable enough to ride on a daily basis I would have to easily put at least a thousand dollars into parts. Mainly having to upgrade the shifters/brake levers, handle bars and both derailleurs as well as the brakes, though those are the least of your worries on this bike they work the best out of everything, they had no issue slowing me down to a complete stop from going 40 km/h.
I am 5'8 and weigh around 165 pounds, I rode this bike on paved roads/ bike trails. The only plus to this bike is that the frame has no flex in it at all, it does lead to a very bumpy ride on rough roads.
At the end of it all regardless of if this bike is on sale or not, save yourself the time an aggravation do not buy it."

excellent bike

Date:October 25, 2010
"I bought the bike 2 years ago. I changed the handle bars to a flat mountain bike style bar. I changed the seat and the pedals too The brakes aren't great, but I will figure out which pads work best. I completely disassembled the bike and took it to my place in Mexico. I have ridden it 5000 km on Mexican roads without incident. My friends pay 10 - 20 times more for a similar bike and then ride it 100 to 500 k a year. I choose to buy plane tickets over a $1500 "poser" bike. Buy this bike, if you have any mechanical skills at all, you will not be dissapointed"

One Year Old Bearings Shot

Date:September 13, 2010
"The bike is just over a year old and the main crank bearings are lose and making noises. Both tires went flat because of metal scaps trapped between the rim and inner tube, I had to file the rim because of sharp edge caused a flat. Constantly adjusting the gears. Seat has to be changed because it provides no comfort.
I purchase anothe CCM bike and the same problems only worst.

Excellent at sales price (200$)

Date:July 26, 2010
"PROS: Price (excellent on sale), fast, corners great, 28c wheels are sturdy and perform, gripshift easy to use, looks great.
CONS: More maintenance and tuning required than bike of higher quality (preferably daily: wheels, brakes, and shifters need attention after every ride, although you can argue that's the case with all road bikes, just moreso on department store ones), brakes do their job but could use an upgrade (required a little oil on the hinges of the calipers as they tended to stick), stock seat too wide (replaced it with a sportier lighter narrower one).
NEUTRAL: People have complained about the handlebar being a two piece and somewhat less reliable understress, but at the end of the day, this is a road bike, your not going to be jumping curbs with this neither will you jump curbs with a Giant or a Specialized (I sure hope not...but hey, it's your bike at the end of the day), pedals are metallic so are heavier than standard plastic and not necessary on this bike so if you'd like a performance boost get some cheap light plastic ones. ,
It is an inexpensive (at the sales price) basic level entry to road bikes and bicycle maintenance in general, that can hone your skills for that future road warrior you'll be able to own and maintain by yourself one day without the fear of breaking expensive parts.
Enjoy this bike for what it is: a quick responsive machine that can serve as an excellent commuter and adequate weekend racer (be gentle on those potholes) which requires a little more tender love and care than it's more expensive counterparts to get it running full throttle.
I am very happy with my purchase as I'm well aware of the care and attention a bike of this price (dept store bike no less) requires. Get it on sale, get out those tools, get old school, and this bike will last you for years!"
