Great saw for the average home handyman

Date:April 20, 2011
"I purchased this saw on sale to complete my porch project, rather than borrow one from a friend. Right out of the box everything was setup great, angles were true and cuts went where they were supposed to go. The little things count, like the extendable wings, the clamp and the handle's adjustable angle. For the average user I would say this saw would be a great tool to have at your disposal."

Saw needs a redesign

Date:November 19, 2010
"A friend of mine brought this saw to an out-of-town job site. We used the saw quite alot everyday for over three months. Performance wise, it was adequate, but we found the fence was weak. The biggest problem was with the power cord. The cord enters at the back of the saw and is covered by a metal cover over the metal slides that allow the saw to travel back and forward. It comes out of that metal cover and is then attached to the blade housing, going up and into the motor. If you use the saw as a chop saw, the constant up and down action of the blade housing causes the power cord to flex between the blade housing and the front of the metal cover over the slides. We had to take the saw apart twice and rewire the power cord, which, of course, shortened the power cord by quite a bit. Saw needs to be rethought and reengineered. If this is done, the saw will be a much better deal for the money."

Great saw

Date:October 6, 2010
"Great 10" saw. Picked one up on sale for less than $300. Can't beat that price for this kind of saw.
Don't have any problems with the depth adjustment or table turning/grinding as other reviewers had.
Highly recommeded at full or sale price."

Average

Date:September 25, 2010
"Bought this saw with some Christmas money. It was on sale for $299. I previously had another MC mitre saw, which had served me well, but I wanted the sliding capacity.
Overall the saw is great for paying $300. It is quiet and smooth, with plenty of power. The rotating handle is a really nice feature as it allows me to make cuts with my left hand, which is near impossible on other saws. Other nice features include the depth stop and 60 degree mitre capacity to one side.
I have a few problems with this saw which is why I've only rated it as average. The fence is bowed; it is only out 0.015 of an inch in the center, but this is enough for me to notice it on perpendicular cuts. As well, I find the fence extensions poorly designed and largely useless.

Good at first

Date:August 17, 2010
"Bought this saw on sale in the spring 2010. Worked very well out of the box. After a couple of weeks the turn table started to get stiff and would not rotate easily. There was a metal on metal sound as I tried to rotate it.
The three year replacement warranty is very good. CT replaced the saw with only the standard questions.
The replacement saw worked great out of the box and after a couple of weeks, same problem. This time, rather than take it back I attempted to find out why it was happening by going to CT. After 8 weeks of run around from the store, head office and the manufacturer, I gave up and returned the saw.
One other comment. The saw has a depth of cut adjustment. The design of this is badly flawed. The wing nut that adjusts it hits the body of the saw as you turn it.You also have to un screw the adjuster when you want to make a thru cut so you have to reset your depth if you want to make the same stop cut again.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this saw.

Can't beat the price

Date:June 16, 2010
"Be sure to get it on sale, but even at full price it's a bargain.
Have had no problems with this so far. I've used it for siding, numerous flooring projects and just cutting lumber.
Bearings operate smoothly, cuts are clean, the laser is precise. Feels as good as a more expensive saw. I don't see why it won't last a long time, as I'm using it around the house and not on the job.
I would not hesitate to buy it again or recommend it to anyone."

Product Fail

"Worked great till day 3 when the bearings seemed to fail and the whole machine shakes horribly, Plastic blade guard was cheap and brittle and cracked after 2nd day on the job. Will be returning for new one, hope it was just a lemon and the next is better."

Great Saw

Date:March 5, 2010
"Excellent mitre saw. Bought this for a flooring job and was more than pleased with the performance. If there is one weakness it is in the day the laser line is very difficult to see.
Right out of the box the saw cut perfect 90's
Would recommend this to saw to all serious woodworkers.

cool tool

Date:October 8, 2009
"I just purchased this saw and so far I love it.
I've basically just got it out of the box and set up. It was basically already assembled, just screwed in a couple knobs and handls.
I have it screwed into the top of a folding stand and it seems to be working fine there.
On my first few test cuts the saw has been very accurate. The laser is a great convenience on this tool. Using other mitre saws without the laser guide will be a huge pain now.
This saw starts and runs very smooth. It feels great using it, no awkward jerks or jolts.
In my opinion the mastercraft maximum line is on par with the big name brands. Every MC maximum tool I have I am very pleased with.

Most used tool in my shop

Date:June 1, 2009
"I love, love, LOVE this saw.
I have worked with Makita and Dewalt saws for years but when it came time to buy my own, this is the saw I chose. Why? Well there were several factors & as far as I could tell this saw was every near as good (on paper) as those "big names" but with a price tag about 1/3 of theirs (when on sale).
I knew that the only way to be sure was to buy one and try one - knowing that if was not satisfied I could return it to CT because of their terrific return policy.
Well, needless to say I never took it back.
This saw is phenomenal & quite frankly I would even consider it over the makita and dewalt even if the price was similar. At 1/3 the cost, its a no-brainer. The mechanism is smoother & it feels more rugged.
I dont believe you'll find a better value in a SCMS. The fact that its a MC Maximum has a terrific (5yr) warranty, and performs how it does are just icing on the cake.
Well done, Mastercraft Maximum."

bang for buck champ

Date:April 29, 2009
"You simply can't go wrong with this saw. Sure there are better performers out there, but be prepared to spend twice as much.
Run through the set-up procedure, (which you'd do with any high end Dewalt/Rigid as well), and you're laughing.
A Diy'er will not exceed the capabilities of this saw."

Great Saw

Date:November 25, 2008
"Tired the original version and like the new one much better. Picked this one up on sale and am very pleased with the purchase. Took all of 15 minutes to get this saw setup and lined up so that it cuts square everytime. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a great saw to add to their shop."

decent purchase

Date:September 26, 2008
"Bought this saw on sale. Had all the options I was looking for. I used a Makita all summer, but could not afford that saw for home projects. The Mastercraft is not as smooth as the higher end saw, but is a close second.
I also needed to replace the blade before doing any work. The laser light stopped working for a bit. Minor annoyances for the sale price though. I have been pleased with other Mastercraft products and am equally as pleased with this product.
Definitely worth the buy on sale.

Great saw at a good price

Date:September 10, 2008
"I bought the saw while on sale and used it to build a garage. I used the blade that came with it but bought a better one about half way through project. Love the saw. Lazer site works well but had to be set when was bought. Right out of the box was .5 degrees out. Dust collector works ok but I do most of the cutting with a shop vac system hooked up if cutting inside. All in all an excellent buy."

My first Mitre Saw

Date:September 10, 2008
"This saw feels and looks good but not quit as refined as other more expensive and professional level saws for working in the field on a daily basis. Has all the features but will test it soon. It looks to be a good saw for the sale price, I would recommend for home use."

Why didn't I buy one before!

Date:September 9, 2008
"I'm a 62 year old wood hacker, not a pro. I needed a saw to cut 1X6 and my Ryobi chop saw wouldn't work. I borrowed this compound saw from my neighbour and after a few cuts was sold. I went out and bought my own! The "dust collection bag" is a joke but the saw is great. Use goggles as it throws a lot of sawdust. I wish the dust bag would work!
I opened the box, did a few practise cuts, and found everything perfect right out of the box, both straight cuts and angles. The blade in the box was a 60 tooth carbide which was great. I've used a 60 on my table saw for years.
Working at my pace ( slow) over about 2 weeks I finished the interior walls and ceiling of a 12 X 20 3 season room, with 12 windows and 2 doors. I used 6" T&G knotty pine, and I made the window sills and mitered the frames for the windows and doors. The saw made me look good and I've received many compliments on the job! (OK I used my Mastercraft table saw also)
I've since made a table and a set of doors. I cannot encourage people more to buy this saw. For the money there is none better.
