DON'T BUY THIS DRILL PRESS

Date:May 19, 2013
"I drilled 5 , 3/8' holes in soft iron, On the 6th hole the spindle broke off. I noticed that there was a lot of wobble, but never gave it much thought, then on the 6th hole the spindle broke off right where the snap ring is. Living 60 miles from the repair shop. How I have to burn my gas to run back & forth to see if it is fixable or not. Only had it for 7 months & drilled 5 1/2 holes~~~~garbage!!!!"

price vs quality

Date:March 6, 2013
"bought the unit on sale aprox a year ago. It assembled quite easily. I have used it quite a bit. It works quite good except for the laser which is a joke. Also the bit wobble decreases the accuracy required for some jobs. Changing speeds to me is not fun time.
Not for the serious woodworker"

"What a piece of junk.
The spindle wobbles. The drill press as not enough power if you want to drill a hole bigger than 1 1/2 inch in hardwood. (by the way my forstner bit was newly bought at lee valley).
I guess it would be good enough to make holes in pine if you don't care about precision."

design has changed

Date:November 13, 2012
"I bought this drill press a few days ago. When I unpacked it, I found that it appears to have been somewhat redesigned even though the CTC number is exactly the same as the model shown on the website.
For a start, the motor is now rated 4.1 A instead of 3.2 A, and the bulit-in worklight is gone without a trace.
The table has two parallel slots (like the base) instead of the four radial slots shown in the photograph.
The depth scale is metal and riveted on. (One of the reviewers below complained that the self-adhesive plastic scale on the earlier version tended to come off.)
The yellow knob on the pulley cover has been replaced by a Phillips head machine screw, so you need a screwdriver to check or change the speed unless you leave the cover unfastened, which might not be a good idea.
For some reason, the chuck is not factory installed; you are supposed to drive it onto the spindle with a hammer yourself (careful!). The chuck seems to be held in place by just friction; the spindle is not threaded. The instructions for removing the chuck refer to a tool that is not supplied.
I have not used the drill press enough to comment on its precision, but the iron castings are a bit rough. I had to scrape a lump of paint out of the throat of the motor head in order to get it to seat on the column.
The laser is still mounted at an angle, so it has to be reset whenever the height of the work surface changes. In other words, the laser guide is largely useless for one-off projects.
The depth stop is an adjustable collar on the shaft that racks the spindle down. This arrangement is unlikely to be as accurate as a threaded rod depth control and much more likely to slip.
Overall, my initial impression is that this new model is not a bad deal when on sale for $90, but I would not pay full price ($190) for it."

I like it

Date:August 22, 2012
"I bought my drill press a few years ago. I use it a lot and it's given me good service. I have a love/hate relationship with Mastercraft. The most important thing with Mastercraft is to THOUROUGHLY INSPECT every bit of the tool for loose or damaged parts. The first drill press I bought had a chipped pully. What bothered me was that there was no way it could have been damaged in shipping. The pully had to have been broken first and then installed anyway. Not cool. I exchanged the unit and it's neven given me any problems. The laser is useless."

Solid Tool for the Money

"I'm an occasional user of this drill press and it's been doing the job just fine. Always had enough power, runs smooth, not very loud and haven't had any major issues. The laser isn't very useful and the tape with the depth increments came loose (glued it back) but other than that no complaints. There have been a couple times where I could of used the larger press but I don't have the space for it. This one fits nicely on my work bench."

Good deal if on sale and precision not required

Date:March 14, 2012
"I got this drill press around christmas time last year on sale for $89.99. It's pretty durable and has plenty of power for my needs, but there are a few drawbacks.
1. Chuck runout is very high. You will need to center-punch your holes if you want reliable accuracy. This error is compounded by the fact that the quill itself has a lot of wobble in it that no amount of adjustment can remove. If the set screw is adjusted so the quill has no slop in the middle of its travel, the screw will gouge out big chunks of soft aluminum at the top of the travel. Not good.
2. The laser is hopeless. It frequently goes out of alignment on its own, and is very time consuming to get an accurate alignment. Also, merely adjusting the height of the table throws the laser out of alignment, or even differing thicknesses of material, i.e. going from a 2x4 to a 4x4 will produce alignment errors. Because of this, I never use the lasers.
Overall the drill press is okay for hobby work if can be had for at least 50% off, but don't expect to use it for repetition of accuracy."

don't buy this drill press if you want to accuracy

Date:February 9, 2012
"This press has several design flaws. It has excessive (almost 1/16") chuck wobble. There is a screw adjustment to reduce wobble - but its a flat head screw and stripped when I tried to do the adjustment. The table height adjustment slips because the worm gear does not mesh well. Finally, the drill would stall and the belt trension adjustment is too difficult to use."

Depends one what you're looking for...

Date:December 12, 2011
"This isn't a bad drill press, but mine isn't all that great, either.
If you're looking for something that's a step above free-hand drilling, then by all means, this is your ticket, especially on sale.
However, this is not a machine for precision or reproducibility.
The problem is that the drill bits tips wobble quite a bit (I believe the technical term is too much runout). I've tried many sets of bits, and I've tried repositioning the bits in the chuck, and they all wobble. The wobble increases the size of your hole, so your, say, 3/32 bit produces a 7/64- or even 1/8-sized hole, etc. Again, it's not the end of the world if you're just drilling pilot holes in softwood, but it is a problem if you need the precision.
I also have a problem with the table. It is very difficult to line up the table's mark with the graduations on the tilt indcator to know you're exactly at 0° or 22.5°, etc. It's also difficult to tighten the adjustment bolt without altering the tilt due to the tightening action.
If this press does the job for you, more power to you. I was looking for a little more precision to elevate it above free-hand drilling."

Awesome!

Date:August 22, 2011
"I bought this drill last week on sale for $89 and used $62 in CT money, so it cost me $25! I have just finished putting it together, which was a little bit challenging as I am not used to large power tools. However, now that it is together, I drilled my first hole in wood and then tried out a piece of glass - this is the reason I bought it. As a glass artist, I need to drill holes of all sizes into glass ranging from 1/8" to 1/2" thick. Worked like a charm, was very easy to control which has eliminated my "fear" of this impressive power tool. Can't wait to cut out all the circles now for my projects!!!! A terrific buy and the price sure didn't hurt! LOL!!!!"

Great Drill

Date:March 8, 2011
"I have had this drill for some time now. While the laser works well and can be calibrated easily I feel it could run off the main power rather then being battery operated. That said, I don't really use the laser all that much.
The built in light works wonders since the dill creates a shadow from lights that may be above the tool.
The drill works great and I mainly use it to cut holes in steal. Clamps that I use to secure the work often interfere with the knobs that pull the press down. This can be resolved since the knobs can be removed easily and then replaced when finished.
I can definitively recommend this product to others."

Very satisfied with initial results

Date:September 30, 2010
"I purchased this drill press on sale ($89.99) and have used it only on 1 project... so far.
I had to drill aprrox 90 3/4" holes in cedar wood.
It did the job very well !
At first I was looking to purchase the big 15” stand alone drill press ($400) but soon realized that, for the use I would be getting out of it, I simply couldn’t justify the extra $300; the lowest price I’ve seen on the 15” model is $350. Also, the 15” model would have taken up a lot more floor space in my garage.
Putting it together:
1) Building it is pretty simple. The main thing you really have to watch out for is the vertical track the table travels on. I was following the instructions and the images seem to suggest that the track bar go on in a particular direction. I mistakenly put it upside down and by doing so, the table could not go down to its lowest point. The drill will still work, but it can cause you headaches if you are using long drill bits or big pieces of wood.
When I realized this, I simply took it apart and re-installed it in the proper direction.
2) The lasers will definitively need adjustment. Be careful when tightening the screws as I heard that they can break if you use too much force.
3) Get ready to get your hands a little dirty as all parts seem to be coated with some type of grease/oil (probably to prevent rust).
Overall thoughts:
1) Pretty good tool for the price
2) Not to noisy when operating
3) If you do not bolt it down to a workbench, you can move it around to facilitate drilling into longer/awkward pieces of wood, or easily store it in a corner when not in use.

good for the price, some initial quality problems

Date:September 12, 2010
"I'm happy with my purchase at the sale price. But....
One of the lasers in the first unit I purchased did not work. I took that back the next day for an exchange. The second one is working, however, the thread that receives the support lock handle was not cut the entire way through. I have a set of taps so that was easy to resolve. But if I did not have those taps then the second one would be have been going back for exchange also."

Great for a work bench tool when you're space is limited and don't have room for the floor model. easy to use and has some good solid weight behind it . not easy to tip over"

Fine for metal work. Works for me!

Date:May 27, 2010
"Just picked one up and it works fine. As they say, not really an industrial press but fine for the home workshop. I use it more for metal work than wood. Someone said it wasn't that good at metal. Well, not so.
You don't drill metal like you drill wood!!! First you need to set at low speed. You may have to use 2 or 3 bits to get a half inch hole through it. (Of course, you need hi speed metal bits. Wood bits just won't cut it!)
Start with a small bit, gradually get bigger. Just like you would with a hand drill. Don't force it through. And... oil. You need to keep the work lubricated as you drill or you'll burn bits up in a hurry. Don't blame the drill press for that. Blame the lack of an oil can!"

Good home use drill press

Date:May 7, 2010
"I bought this one on sale for $89.99 a month or so ago for my garage. It was easy to setup and put together, might have taken me about an hour from the time I opened the box until I bolted it down to my work bench.
The quality is great and is solidly built. I have done a bit of drilling with it and it works fine for average home use.
I recommend it..."
