not quite there

Date:August 9, 2013
"I would not buy a second time. It is better than some but still not very good.( I have migrated to a 30x1 belt sander to sharpen with.) I did try and use this unit for about 6 months. It is not up to my standard. The course wheel is way to rough. the fine sharpening wheel is better but would be better thought of as a medium cut. (mine was slightly out of round as well). The guide/rest is difficult to set and flexes too much. With my present setup (30x1 belt 300grit course, 600 grit medium, and 1000 grit fine and polish with a leather strop.) I can easily produce razor sharp finishes. I gave this unit to "the Salvation Army Thrift Store""

Great machine!

Date:September 23, 2011
"I've been looking for a real sharpener for a while and for some reason, never noticed this one existed until I walked by it.
After spending a lot of money on the expensive pass-through sharpeners which are useless once the edge of the blade is gone, I was looking at several other machines, but I knew that what I really wanted was a wide wheel type machine, so when I saw this one I didn't hesitate and hoped for the best.
Putting it together was fairly simple, and I was sharpening my knives in minutes.
I started with cheap knives so to get a fell of this machine and see what I could do.
The grinding wheel was great for the knives that were really bad,so to start giving them back an edge. (but one needs to be extremely careful to not damage the blade as this will eat the metal away in a blink of an eye)
The wet wheel is wide and perfect for every knife I used it with. The speed is perfect to be accurate and prevents from eating the blade away.
Using the angle rest, I was able to start reshaping the edge, and in minutes, I was able to flip the knife over and start to pull the steel and work the edge as if I've been doing it for years.
It took a steady hand and several passes, a bit of patience, but my knives were better than new once I was done.
A few more minutes with my honing steel afterwards, and I was slicing through paper like a paper cutter with all my kitchen knives. It was great to finally be able to slice food properly again.
I took out my pocket knives and such, and again... a bit of patience and these knives have never been as shard as they are now.
The only way this machine could be improved would be if they'd make it with a third wheel, being a ceramic one to truly finish with a razor finish."

Great device

Date:October 13, 2010
"Disclaimer: I have only used the wet wheel.
The good:
- The wet wheel is nice and wide, which is almost impossible to find. It also runs at the perfect speed, and the simple water cooling system is excellent.
- Easy, simple assembly, with a good amount of customizability.
- Overall design is simple and solid
The bad:
- The wet wheel is either not uniformly shaped or maybe not centred around the shaft - it has a slight wobble when it turns. I have seen this on two machines now
- Both wheels often come with a few small chips
- The machine is very heavy
Overall, this is a great product. There are a few things that suggest it is a bit cheaply made, but it does the job. To keep the wet wheel clean, you'll probably want some sort of diamond stone to run against it to clean metal off the wheel after it builds up for a while - I do this fairly frequently."

Good device

Date:July 27, 2008
"This is a pretty good wet sharpener. For the most part I'm opposed to power sharpeners as the heat generated tends to effect the overall hardness of the blade. This sharpener does a good job of getting your blades sharp and keeping them cool in the process. I use this mostly on kitchen and utility knives around the home."

None other on the market

Date:June 5, 2008
"I have not seen similar tool sold by anyone else. I have had mine for years. Used it sparingly, mainly to get really blunt knives into shape for final sharpening, honing and stropping.
The wheel seems a bit excentric but I manage.
I do not need it often, but when I do, I would not be without it.
