Mastercraft make masterful tools

Date:May 12, 2013

Replaced the old brick cordless drill

Date:May 8, 2013
"When my old brick (battery alone outweighed this whole unit) refused to charge, I opted for this model while it was on sale. Wow, I was blown away with how quick the batteries charged, how light the entire unit it and how well it will hold a charge while not in use."

Update

Date:February 12, 2013
"Well it's nearly one full year since I purchased the 12v drill and multi tool as a combo.
Cantire was listening. They now have batteries you can buy as an extra. Good job!
The drill still does a great job. The only problem so far is: after nearly a year of use one the tree contacts inside the drill that the battery touches to power up is burnt and the drill will stall out from time to time.

best purchase

Date:November 20, 2012
"got this in a pinch just happend to be on sale for a good price thought i would give it a try. got it home and used it right out of the box. i was able to put up a whole frame for a wall with one battery that i didn't even charge. i got the wall up with no sign of the battery draining, it showed up my other 14 v drill I would recommend this to any one looking for a pretty good drill only thing bad being it is a little slow for high speed drilling but will still drill though wood with ease haven't tried metal yet"

Good, but can't handle all jobs

Date:October 27, 2012
"I've owned this drill for over a year. It's lightweight, easy to use because it's small, holds a charge for a fairly long time, and comes with 2 batteries.
Unlike some others who have posted here, I found it didn't have sufficient torque for me to use a 3/4 inch spade bit through the joists in my basement ceiling to run wiring - I took out my Porter Cable 12V drill, used the same bit, and it didn't miss a beat.
I still like the drill, it fits into smaller places than a bigger drill and I use it whenever I can, but it won't replace a stronger drill."

Super powerful.

Date:July 24, 2012
"Li-ion is sure a lot better than the old technology, the battery is so small and yet so powerful.
We built a storage rack in our garage with thick woods and this had no problem driving in large screws. The charger is super quick and the battery lasts long time. Wait until it goes on sale, make sure you grab one for yourself. You won't be disappointed with Li-Ion."

Reliable, and Powerful for Its Size

Date:June 20, 2012
"I bought this drill last year when we did a bathroom reno. It handled the job of screwing down 3/4 plywood with no problem. Since then I have used it many times for jobs around the house and it has not let me down.
I just picked it up after not using it for months and it had plenty of charge left.
As others have mentioned, the lightweight aspect is also a real plus."

Very satisfied

Date:June 6, 2012
"I love this little drill. It may be small and light, but its surprisingly powerful. I just used it to punch a 1.5" hole through a 2 * 4 with a spade bit. What more do you need than that.
The battery life is great. With the two batteries its hard to believe I'll ever run out of power. On is always in the drill, the other on the charger."

Good buy for odd jobs

Date:March 7, 2012
"Bought this drill as a combo kit with the multi tool for $80. This drill has been my main screw driver for all my house projects. The battery life is good, it's light weight and small enough to get into compact spaces. The charger recharges batteries quickly. You may want to buy a second battery which CanTire still does not stock at this time. Buying a single battery from a retailer selling these tools should be a given...just sayin...CanTire dudes."

Excellent tool

Date:February 12, 2012
"I have the 14 volt drill as well. This however is the tool I reach for first. It's more compact. The batteries hold a charge amazingly long, and recharge fast. Can't believe the amount of power this thing has! Only down side is that it only has a single speed gearbox, vs the 14 volt. This allows for the compact size I imagine... Love it. Highly recommend it. Plus if you wait for awhile, it will go on sale!"

This is a really, really good product

Date:January 18, 2012
"After mucking about with tangled extension cords for 20+ years I decided that I wanted a cordless drill/driver. I'm impressed with this model. I've used this unit almost daily since I bought it about 6 months ago. On big and small projects alike.
This 12 V unit is is relatively inexpensive (I paid sale price of $59). It comes with extra battery and charger. The Li-ion batteries hold charge extremely well. In practice I have yet to need to recharge and rarely need to switch batteries on-site. Normally I carry the 2nd battery but leave the charger at home.
There is lots of (adjustible) torque in this drill -- sufficient for drilling steel pipe or driving scores of 4" deck screws. Hint: buy quality drill/driver bits as torque in this drill is more than adequate to eat both cheap bits and screws/nuts. Remember to wear eye protection as it only takes one wee bit of flying wood/metal to ruin your whole day...
The ergonometics of this unit are excellent. The drill fits well in hand and the forward/reverse/off switch works positively and intuitively by feel. The unit is small enough to get into tight corners. If you eliminate the supplied carrying case it fits nicely in a small (24") toolbox or your average army surplus shoulder bag. It is lightweight enough to forget about weight while standing on a 22' extension ladder in a snowstorm, or while standing on tippy-toe to replace a ceiling light fixture in your basement.
The drill itself seems well-constructed and durable...but I can give it only 4 stars for durability because of my limited 6 month experience. We shall see..."

Great performance for a little drill

Date:September 2, 2011
"If you are looking for a no-frills, reliable drill/driver for light duty work around the home, office or cottage, then the Mastercraft 12V Lithium-ion Drill/Driver may suit your needs.
The 054-1211-4 has an all high impact ABS plastic body, with a rubber overmould around the handle. It's reasonably well balanced in the hand, but it tips forward if you stand it up on the workbench.. The trigger is large enough to be easily controlled with forefinger, and the forward/reverse switch can likewise be quickly activated by thumb and the side of the forefinger.
The drill uses a 1.3 Ah 12V lithium-ion battery. It generates 105 inch-pounds of torque, and has a variable speed range of 0 to 500 RPM. With this torque level you can easily drill 1 1/4" holes up to a couple of inches deep in softwood and 3/4" holes through 1" hardwood. You can also set 2" or 3" lag bolts in pre-drilled holes. For drilling larger, deeper holes and setting longer bolts you'll need a higher torque drill. However, the low speed on this drill, coupled with an 18 position clutch, make it ideal for setting screws. A higher speed setting would have been a nice addition, making it easier and quicker for a wider variety of drilling applications. The pressure-sensitive trigger works well, and the clutch moves smoothly without any slop. I also like that audible 'click' at each clutch setting so you know when your on the mark.
Mastercraft includes a 30 minute diagnostic charger with this drill. A red light tells you if there is a problem with the battery, and a solid green light lets you know when you're good to go. And you don't have to worry about leaving the battery in the charger; it won't get over charged. Replacement batteries (54-1259-2) are a reasonable $39.99.
A 3/8" chuck is all most homeowners need; it will hold just about any size bit or driver you can get at Canadian Tire.
The 054-1211-4 has an LED work light, which I think is a very handy feature, particularly when you're drilling in a closet or under a counter where the lighting is less than ideal. It also comes with a soft side carry case so you can store the drill, batteries and charger all together"

Wise purchase

Date:August 26, 2011
"This tool was more than I expected, great performance, more work done per battery charge and feels great in your hand. It is still in use after three years of hard useage.
I use it mostly for installing and removing screws as it fits perfectly in my carpenture's belt.
As soon as it goes on sale, I plan to buy two more.
My only issue was the Forward/Reverse switch stopped working for the Forward function. I took it apart a repaired it as I did not want to lose such a great tool."

Very good general-purpose drill

Date:August 3, 2011
"This drill is great for small jobs and chores around the house. I really love the compact size - it's also well balanced in your hand and a joy to use. Li-Ion is a big step up from Ni-Cad (my last drill was a Ni-Cad). You also get two batteries, making this drill a great value for your money.
This drill made wall-mounting a pair of speakers an easy and straightforward task."
