good value

Date:May 4, 2012
"This is a pretty good meter and, at about $27, is an excellent value. I wouldn't mind paying a little more for an LED or backlit display, though. There have been times when the values don't quite add up (volts x amps doesn't exactly = watts) but that may be due to fluctuations that occur too fast for the digital display to keep up."

very useful

Date:February 13, 2012
"This meter will measure small loads down to 2W. In most Canadian cities, a 2W load that runs all year round would come out to less than 17 cents. So it's hardly a big deal that it can't measure less than 2W.
I have been using it around the house to measure how much energy my devices are consuming. It helps me decide whether I should have something unplugged, leave it plugged in, or leave it in a low-power state. For example, my desktop PC draws 5W when shut down. When It is in standby (sleep) mode, it draws 7W. So is the 2W (which would cost about 17 cents) worth the convenience of having a faster boot up time?
One more note. For added convenience, use this meter with an extension cord."

become aware of ur carbon footprint

Date:January 5, 2012
"The display is difficult to read without a flashlight and it is difficult to find cheap batteries for it. However, it is a fun product to have and if you are concerned about your impact on the environment then you must have a product like this to at least understand where you are consuming energy. I suggest you keep a spreadsheet with times and dates in order to accurately gauge the electrical consumption of products around your home over time.
I have 2 of these because they are reasonably priced compared to other solutions. I have been charting the electrical consumption of my electric scooter over the last 2 years with one of these. I use the scooter for commuting and so it is equivalent to logging fuel consumption and economy for my car. This device helped me realize that electric cycling costs only $8 in fuel per year to travel over 5000 km. That is pretty efficient... and I would have no way of knowing how much money Ive been saving without it. Also, it helped me determine how much money/electricity I use for my home entertainment setup... it is a lot. If you want to do something about ur carbon footprint, then the first thing to do is to be conscious about ur consumption. This device is a crucial step in raising ur awareness.

Nice meter - here's a solution to battery cost

Date:December 14, 2011
"The A76/LR44 batteries are about $4 each. I found some home security gadgets at dollar stores come with 2 or 3 of these batteries all for $1 or so.
Another solution if you are handy is buy a AAA dual battery holder at The Source. AAA's are same voltage as button batteries. Attach it to the meter and insert the tinned wires into the battery power slots. Secure with duct tape. Now you can use AAA batteries or rechargeables. Either will last a lot longer than button batteries."

Nice Gadget, pity memory batteries cost $8

Date:December 12, 2011
"Nice Gadget, pity memory batteries cost $8, I was delighted with this gadget until it came time to replace the batteries that maintain the memory.
Energizer 357 Batteries cost $3.99 each and you need two. almost better off to buy a new meter on sale for $15. A pity the designers didn't use a cheaper battery, or better a capacitor that would never need changing, it would e recharged by the outlet.

Not useful for small loads

Date:September 25, 2011
"I have one of these and I compared it to my friend's "brand-name" energy meter.
The problem with the blue planet meter is it cannot measure small loads. Things like cordless phone handsets, ipod chargers, etc. It just reads zero for them. Whereas my friend's meter will display 1 or 2 watts.
At higher loads the blue planet meter is fine - no problem.
So this meter is fine for bigger items (like checking the energy consumed by your refrigerator), but if you're hoping to hunt down some of the smaller "phantom loads" in your house, the blue planet might not be your best choice. At full price I'd think you're better off with a Kill-A-Watt, but if you can get the blue planet on sale then it's probably worth the $15."

Very Useful Tool !!

Date:September 3, 2010
"Now that Ontario has added the HST and introduced the Time Of Use Billing to my hydro bill, the cost of power has gone up. So to combat this rise I bought this device to find out how much it costs to run items around the house and have learned what items I can do without during the peak periods.
I have kept the device on the Wattage used setting since I am billed per Killowatt hour. I also keep the price set at 5.3 cents (Off Peak) and then multiply the cost by 1.5 for Mid Peak, and 1.87 for Peak to figure those costs.
So far my findings have made me unplug things that are not used everyday (dvd players, dishwasher) and attach timers to power bars for things like my tv so that they are not using phantom power while I am asleep and at work."

Be Green, Save Electricity

Date:January 11, 2010
"Have used this for 6 months now to track down parasitic loads and to get an idea how much various appliances cost to run. Lots of fun and saves electricity. Plan on using it with the RV and generator to monitor loads and voltage."

Very neat little device

Date:July 6, 2009
"This is a very nice product. I have been having fun with it trying to measure how much power different devices take in my house. I found that my dual SLI gaming computer + LCD screen + surround sound system takes max of 305 watts when I play COD5. Different phases in the game makes my video cards draw different amounts of power (low 3d = 50 watts less power draw). I also used another one on my bar fridge and saw that it was quiet efficient and had low power draw than what i had originally expected it to draw.
This is a very handy and fun device,
the reason i didnt give it 4 stars as oppossed to 5 stars, is that it does not have a lighted display, and therefore is a bit bit difficult to read in cramped spaces."

Neat little unit

Date:July 4, 2009
"As others have said, this is a great way to see how much power you are using. I plugged it into my plasma TV and you can see in real time how much power it is using; screens with lots of white draw up to 400 watts while dark or black screens only draw 70-100 watts. One thing to remember is that the "accumulated operation time" only measures the time when there is current flowing through the unit. I discovered this with my chest freezer, which only draws current when the compressor is running."

Cool Tool

Date:April 19, 2009
"I'd been wanting to get a Kill A Watt, but they're pretty pricey. Got this on sale and it's been very interesting seeing how much power things draw when they're "off" and even when they're on!
My Rogers PVR for example draws 21 watts when it's off. Computer- 7 watts. Monitor- 2 watts. I was paying upwards of $100 a year leaving the computer/modem/wireless router on 24/7. No more. Have started using power bars and timers for the router/modem/PVR.
If you've ever shopped for solar panels to supplement or generate electricity you know that at the cost of generating a watt is fairly steep, it's easier to save a watt than generate it.
I suspect that the reason for my high electric bills is the fairly new Maytag fridge - I have it plugged into the "meter" and will check it 24 hours from now to see just how much it's costing me per day.
And next winter I think I'll be a little more careful with the heater in the bedroom that draws 600W on the lowest setting.
Useless but interesting factoid: one half of my toaster uses 800 watts.
Only CON so far: no backlight"

Very Useful

Date:January 9, 2009
"I was suprised how much energy some items use as well as how little others use. My water cooler it turns out was costing me more to run than my computer running all day. I am still plugging appliances into this little money saver."

Very useful gadget

Date:November 21, 2008
"I bought one of these over a year ago. I found that my 50-year-old beer fridge didn't cost anywhere near the $150-$250 a year to run that David Suzuki claims. Not even close! (But I got it hauled away anyway and now buy less beer.)"

Works really well for lots of applications

Date:September 19, 2008
"I found out that 1 hour of gaming is equivilant to 4 hours of my pc idle'ing and ~ 24 hours of my pc being off/standby. (High performance PC) - That alone saves me a few $$ per day.
Already paid for itself, leaving pc in standby is 6 times better than idle'ing (great especially since to return from standby for me is 5 seconds, well worth to do it)
Only flaw - No backlight."

Absolutely essential

Date:September 11, 2008
"I finally got my windmill and solar pannel going now I needed to know how much energy I use to run the dehumidifyer and fans in my old maritimes NB home as my aim is to run those off grid. Now I know and I can plan. I have a perfect image of my electricity consumption pattern. Albeit the unit I got was so old that the paper, plastic and the meter itself had yellowed with age, it works absolutely fantastic. I certainly will talk about it to my neighbour as he keeps losing tenants because they find that their electricity bill is too high."

Good for finding leaks

Date:September 9, 2008
"The metre is useful for finding the 'leaks' in power drawn by electronic equipment when it's "off". I was surprised to find that my monitor draws 85 W when in 'power-save' mode. It displays the line voltage, current draw, power, and times how long it's plugged in to compute energy, in kWh. The meter is easy-to-use, but the only method I've found to reset the timer is to remove the battery."

Energy Meter

"Pays for itself really quickly if you are willing to make a small effort. It shows you leaks that you didn't know were there. You don't have to be technical to use it but a bit of basic understanding helps."
